I finally did it! I’ve been saying that Legal Linguist needed a Twitter feed for over a year now. This week, I bit the bullet. Why did I wait? Because I wanted to do it right. Then I learned about a great way to schedule my social media posts. It takes a load off my mind and lets me plan ahead to make a better first (tenth? hundredth?) impression.
Social media marketing can be intimidating. When you read the blogs of professional marketers you may feel like following all the best practices won’t leave you time to do anything else! After all, who has time to be tied to their social media accounts every day?
No one. That’s why programs like TweetDeck and HootSuite were invented. These social media management programs let you organize all your social media accounts in one place. The best part is, these programs let you schedule posts in advance.
When you stumble upon that great article about civil mediation at 11:00 at night while you are lying in bed, you don’t have to figure out how to save the link and then remember to go back to it the next day during business hours to post it on each of your 4 different social media platforms. Instead, you can use a social media management platform to craft one post, customize it for your platforms, and share it at different times over the next day.
Or the next week, or month! One social media commentator recently suggested that we plan too short term. Instead of planning for the next day, why not create a calendar and be strategic about your social media posts?
Like my new plan for Twitter. Since Legal Linguist is all about writing for business, my weekly schedule goes like this:
- Monday: Inspirational Writing Quote – because we all need a pick-me-up at the start of the work week.
- Tuesday: My blog! You’re reading it right now! By making it easy for followers to find your blog you will drive more traffic to your website, and your door.
- Wednesday: Comic About Writing. People are more likely to engage with your social media accounts if you can be positive and even funny once and a while.
- Thursday: Someone else’s blog. Social media is all about curating other people’s content. Showing your followers that you are connected with your professional community will make you more of an authority.
- Friday: Weekend Writing Prompts. By giving my followers a call to action (in this case something to write about), I invite them to engage with me on a more intimate level.
Everybody’s content calendar will be different. If your business has multiple areas you may want to focus on one part each week. Just make sure to be intentional about what you are posting, retweeting, and favoriting on Twitter. Through strategic, scheduled posting you can build a following and develop a better audience for your blog and your business.
